Tips for Green Living From your home grown, locally owned bank.

Small Changes, Big Impact.

It is often overwhelming to tackle huge changes in our lives. Not everyone can ride a bike all the time or use solar power. But, there are many small efforts that can impact big change. Increase your awareness and try just a few. If everyone made just the slightest change, together we would make an enormous difference.

  • Skip the car when you can. Find ways to use your car less by walking, biking, riding the bus, or car pooling to your destination. Buy a fuel efficient or alternative fuel vehicle. When you drive, keep your vehicle maintained, accelerate gradually, and avoid unnecessary idling.
  • Be mindful of what you eat. Support local farmers and organic farms by buying food directly from farmers at markets and by looking for organic food in your grocery store. Both options support the local economy, are better for the environment and healthier for your family.
  • Save energy at home. Reduce energy use in your home by choosing Energy Star rated energy-efficient appliances and lighting. Lower your thermostat by a few degrees in winter, raise it in summer. Buy energy efficient light bulbs. Be sure your home is well insulated. All of these steps will help the environment and save you money!
  • Recycle and buy recycled. Get involved in your local recycling program and complete the recycling loop by purchasing products made from recycled materials such as building materials, furniture, paper and even clothing. Bank of the San Juans uses recycled paper for brochures and recycles everything.
  • Use less toxic cleaners. Single-ingredient, common household materials such as baking soda, vinegar, or plant-based soaps and detergents can often do the job on your carpet or other surfaces. Or, check the local stores for environmentally friendly cleaning supplies.
  • Watch your water usage. We live in a water critical area. Turn off your sink while brushing your teeth. Fix dripping faucets. Take quick showers. Convert a portion of your lawn into a xeriscape or climate appropriate landscape that doesn't require watering. This will result in less work for you and will save water!
  • Get involved and educate others. Bring awareness to those with you live and work. Encourage everyone to start making small changes so that together we can make a BIG difference.
